My Secret Playlist: by Alec Empire from Atari Teenage Riot

After 10 years of silence, seminal digital hardcore creators, Atari Teenage Riot have reunited, playing enormous sold-out venues in Europe. Heading to North America, they recently signed onto Dim Mak, bringing along ATR newcomer (and Kanye West/Nine Inch Nails collaborator) MC CX Kidtronik. Atari Teenage Riot is known for their intense live show, and it's been reinvigorated by the reunion. Check out the cinematic montage of furious industrial, rave-rock chaos in the video for their new single "Activate!", directed by Zan Lyons, here . This is co-founder Alec Empire's selection of his eight favourite songs, in his own words.

The Screamers: Punished or Be Damned
Jello Biafra gave me this video about ten years ago. Amazing band! Possibly the only band with "the" in the title that I would listen to these days. They spearheaded a lot of the punk electro stuff for our generation. [watch the video]

Cluster: Caramel
To me, these German musicians were way more influential than Kraftwerk. Of course, they all came from the same pool of bands back in the day, but Eno and all these other people took from them. We all should be grateful. [watch the video]

Prince Buster: Black Power
How much I love all these old 7 inch vinyl records from Jamaica! They have such a violent sound. The snaredrums sound brutal, but energetic at the same time. I can't stand top 40 rap or RnB. I listen to this stuff instead. [hear the track]

Miles Davis & John Coltrane: So What
So good, so f*cking good. These guys were never boxed in. Any musician who is not aware of what Davis and Coltrane did should perhaps stop. It's amazing how music which is that old can show us new ways to break out of the pattern. I love making music — making money with it comes much later in the list. All the cynical musicians who are just in it for their careers hopefully will quit soon. [watch the video

Anton Webern: 5 Movements, Opus 5
How would today's film scores sound without his compositions? I've loved what we call 'modern classical music' in Germany since I was 13 years old. I never quite understood why people accept music like this if it's part of a film and when they hear it at home or elsewhere they get so scared about reality that they can't handle it. I listen to this for breakfast. [hear the track]

James White: Disco Jaded
A lot of people find his music unlistenable because of the crazy and wild sax playing. I love that stuff. it's never grown old on me.

The Residents: The Walrus Hunt
The Residents did all kinds of stuff. This track did inspire me a long time ago. It makes me wonder whether top 40 artists are just puppets these days, put in place by the dying music industry dinosaurs. Why not have bands look and sound like this? I think it would be way more fun. [hear the track]

Sun Ra: Nuclear War
I remember flying back from Japan a few days after 9/11 and the whole plane was completely empty and listening to this on headphones. It was intense. You felt the world changing underneath you. [hear the track
